Sound as Healing Tool

Tibetan Singing Bowl

One of my favorite ways to move energy is by using vocalizations that I “connect” up to a client’s energy. It’s the tool I am most often moved to use spontaneously, as I uncover stagnant energy, especially the energy of held emotions, or areas that need healing. I’ll sometimes use it for connection to Spirit. I’ve found that sound healing occurs in my daily life as well. I’ll start toning, or singing and just follow where it takes me. I usually feel great afterwards, having had an instant mood lift.

To get started, a great exercise to clear your fifth chakra, Visshudda, is to utter guttural sounds with pressure, like “guh”. The first time I tried this I was in the middle of working on 5th chakra issues, by trying to speak only from a place of love for myself and others. Anyway, I tried the guttural sounds and instantly broke into tears. I don’t know what it was about, but clearly I’d released some held energy. Very cathartic. That hasn’t happened again, but is a great example of the power of sound.

Another exercise is to chant a chakra’s seed sound (bija mantra.) In the case of Visshudda, “ham” (pronounced “hum”.) Make sure you do it in a manner that resonates through your chest and nasal cavity. Do this 108 times. As an aside, I’ve been clearing my chakras recently using each of their seed sounds, and my 2 year old daughter has started joining in. Sweet!

In my work with clients, the connection I make is psychic, where I can work directly with the energy. However, it’s not necessary to be able to make this type of “connection”. You can simply make the tonal sounds, and the vibration made will be enough. There are many other ways to work with sound for healing purposes, such as voice or instruments that provide overtones. I invite you to explore, or experience this modality!
